If you installed solar years ago, your needs have probably changed. You may have added air-conditioning, an EV or more people to the household, your inverter may be ageing, and feed-in credits have fallen. The options are many: add panels, add a battery, replace the inverter with a hybrid, join a Virtual Power Plant or wait. Each has different costs, approvals and benefits.

Upgrading an existing system has traps: mixed panels, inverter limits, network export rules and STC eligibility for the new part. We deal with these regularly, so our advice is practical. Incentive facts to know. The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program offers roughly 30% off the installed cost of a battery added to existing solar, at approximately $272 per kWh for the first 14 kWh, $163 per kWh from 14 to 28 kWh and $41 per kWh from 28 to 50 kWh, stepping down every 1 January and 1 July. From 1 July 2026, NSW offers a one-off incentive of up to $1,000 for connecting an existing battery to a VPP.
Only the newly added panels may create STCs, and extra capacity usually needs network approval. Confirm current values on the official pages before signing.
