A single cracked or failed solar panel can reduce the output of the whole string it is connected to, and damaged glass or backsheets can let in moisture and create safety risks. Panels can be damaged by hail, falling branches or impacts during other roof work, and manufacturing defects can show up as hot spots or delamination.
The challenge is matching. The original model is often no longer available, so we select a replacement with suitable electrical characteristics, dimensions and connectors for your existing strings, such as a quality JA Solar panel where it is a good match. Designing solar strings is core to our work, so we understand how a replacement panel affects the rest of the array. If a close enough match isn't available, we explain the options honestly, such as reconfiguring strings or replacing a small group of panels. Warranty or insurance? Manufacturer product warranties generally cover defects, not impact or storm damage. Hail, trees and storms are usually matters for your home or business insurance, so check your policy before repairs; our report supports the claim.
In a string, the weakest panel can limit the others, so a poorly matched replacement can reduce output. Panels commonly lose around 0.4-0.55% of their output a year, so a new panel sitting beside older ones is normal and we allow for it. The price depends on the number of panels, roof height and pitch, panel availability and whether rails or clamps also need replacing. Replacing panels without changing system capacity doesn't normally need network approval.
