Pool pumps, hot-water systems, heaters and some irrigation pumps use a lot of energy but are often flexible about when they run. A smart load controller switches them on when your solar system is producing a surplus and off when it isn't, with a backup schedule so they still run long enough on cloudy days. It turns exported solar, worth only a few cents per kWh, into energy used on site.

Not every appliance should simply have its power switched on and off. Heat pumps, variable-speed pool pumps and some heaters have their own electronics and may need control through a dedicated input rather than cutting their supply, to avoid faults or warranty problems. We check the manufacturer's requirements first.
Motor loads need contactors rated for their start-up current, which is one reason load control is always work for a licensed electrician. The price depends on the number of loads, switchboard space, distance to the equipment and whether you already have monitoring that can drive the controller. Loads on a controlled load tariff may need circuit changes that affect billing.
