A hybrid solar and battery system closes that gap: surplus daytime solar charges the battery, and the battery runs the home after sunset instead of buying grid electricity at higher evening rates. Federal battery discount: the Cheaper Home Batteries Program takes roughly 30% off the installed cost of a battery installed with solar, at approximately $272 per kWh for the first 14 kWh and $163 per kWh from 14 to 28 kWh. It needs an approved battery and an SAA-accredited installer, and the value steps down every 1 January and 1 July to 2030.
STCs also discount the solar, roughly $1,700-$1,800 off a typical 6.6 kW system in 2026. The NSW household battery installation incentive has been suspended since 30 June 2025, so for most households it no longer stacks. Confirm current values on the official pages before signing.
Published Sydney ranges are $4,500-$6,500 for 6.6 kW solar and $8,000-$11,000 for a 10 kWh battery after the federal discount.
