Structural Engineering Certification

$690.00

A qualified structural engineer's check and certification of roof loads, wind region and fixings for your solar array, as needed for some roofs, large arrays and commercial buildings.

From $690 (Per roof), including GST. Indicative starting price: the final fixed price is confirmed in writing after a site assessment.

Solar panels and mounting rails add weight to a roof and, just as importantly, catch the wind. On most standard homes, installing to the mounting system's engineering documentation is enough. Some situations call for a structural engineer to check the roof directly: older or lightweight framing, long roof spans, exposed high-wind sites, large arrays, tilt frames on flat roofs, and most commercial and industrial buildings.

Structural certification is from $690 per roof. This is an indicative starting price; the final price depends on the building type, roof size, access to the structure, whether drawings exist and whether strengthening needs to be designed.

What's included

  • A review of the proposed array layout, panel weights and mounting system
  • Inspection of the roof framing or structure by a qualified structural engineer
  • Assessment of roof loads, including the dead load of panels and rails
  • Wind region, terrain and building height considerations for the site
  • Checks of fixing type, spacing and attachment into the structure
  • A signed engineering report or certification setting out the findings and any conditions
  • Recommendations for strengthening where the structure is not adequate as it is

Why Blue Energy Solar

We arrange the engineering as part of your project, so the engineer works from our actual design and the mounting system we install. That avoids generic reports that do not match what goes on the roof. If the engineer requires changes, we build them into the layout and quote before installation, so there are no surprises on the day.

Recommended for

Owners of older, lightweight or unusual roofs, large residential arrays and commercial buildings where a structural sign-off is required or advisable.

Building standards divide Australia into wind regions, and exposed hilltops, coastal sites and taller buildings all place more load on panel fixings. Mounting systems are tested for defined conditions, and an engineer confirms your roof and fixings suit them.

  • Commercial building owners, strata committees and some councils often ask for certification before installation.
  • Engineering assesses the structure; it does not repair a roof in poor condition.
  • If strengthening is needed, the work is quoted separately.

Certification applies to the design reviewed. Adding panels later or changing the layout may require the engineer to review it again.

Directions

1. Request engineering certification, or accept our recommendation for it during your solar quote.
2. We send the engineer the proposed layout, mounting details and site information.
3. The engineer inspects the structure and reviews loads, wind region and fixings.
4. You receive a signed report with the findings and any conditions or strengthening needed.
5. We build any requirements into the installation and quote before work starts.

Warnings

The price shown is an indicative starting price; the final fixed price is confirmed in writing after reviewing the building and design.
Certification covers the specific array layout and mounting system reviewed; later changes may need a new review.
Strengthening works, roof repairs and any special access equipment for the inspection are quoted separately where needed.
Clear access to the roof space or structure is required on the day of inspection.
Council, building owner or owners corporation approvals remain separate from the engineering report.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Most standard homes with sound tiled or metal roofs can be installed using the mounting system's engineering documentation. Certification is usually needed for older or damaged framing, lightweight or unusual roofs, tilt frames, large arrays, exposed high-wind locations and commercial buildings. We tell you during the quote if we think engineering is required, and why.

The report explains why and usually what would make it adequate, such as extra fixings, closer rail spacing, a different mounting system or strengthening of rafters or purlins. Sometimes the answer is a smaller array or a different roof face. We rework the design and quote with those changes, so you can decide with the full cost in front of you.

Yes. A signed report is commonly provided to building owners, strata committees and, where required, council as part of an approval process. Each body can set its own requirements, so tell us at the start who needs the report. The engineer can then address the points they will be looking for.

It adds a step, but it rarely needs to hold things up. Simple residential roofs are quick; commercial buildings, missing drawings or strengthening designs take longer. We request the engineering early in the project, alongside the network application, so the report is ready well before your installation date.
