Solar-Powered EV Charging

$1,990

A solar-matching smart EV charger that follows your solar export using a current sensor or energy meter, so your car charges from surplus solar instead of exporting it cheaply.

From $1,990 (Solar-matching charger, installed), including GST. Indicative starting price: the final fixed price is confirmed in writing after a site assessment.

If you have solar, you are probably exporting surplus power in the middle of the day for a few cents per kWh. A solar-matching EV charger puts that surplus into your car instead. A current transformer (CT) or energy meter at the switchboard measures how much power is flowing to the grid, and the charger adjusts its charging rate up and down to follow it, so the car soaks up solar that would otherwise leave your property.

A solar-matching charger starts from $1,990 installed. This is an indicative starting price; the final fixed price is confirmed in writing after we check your solar system, switchboard and cable route.

What's included

  • A check of your solar system size, typical export and switchboard
  • A smart EV charger with solar-matching modes
  • A CT sensor or energy meter installed at the switchboard
  • A dedicated circuit and a standard cable run to the charger location
  • Configuration of solar-only, solar-plus-grid and scheduled modes
  • Installation by our licensed electricians, with testing and app set-up

Why Blue Energy Solar

Solar charging works best when the charger, solar system and household loads are considered together. We check how much surplus your system typically produces, whether you have a battery that should charge first, and when your car is usually at home. Where you have a Sigenergy, GoodWe, Fox ESS or Sungrow hybrid system, we consider integrated charging options that share its monitoring. Then we set modes that suit your driving, such as solar-only charging on ordinary days and a scheduled top-up from the grid before a long trip, and show you how to switch between them.

Recommended for

Homes and businesses with solar that export surplus during the day and have an EV parked on site.

Minimum charge rate: most EVs need a minimum charging current, roughly 1.4 kW on single-phase. If the solar surplus falls below that, the charger pauses or draws some grid power, depending on the mode.

Seasons: winter and cloudy days produce less surplus, so solar-only charging adds less range. A 6.6 kW system in Sydney produces roughly 24-27 kWh a day on average, but much of that may be used by the home.

Battery priority: if you have a home battery, you can usually choose whether the battery or the car charges first.

Price drivers: cable run, switchboard space and meter location.

Directions

1. Request a quote and share your solar system size and vehicle model.
2. We check your switchboard, meter location and cable route.
3. You receive a fixed-price quote for the charger and solar-matching set-up.
4. Our licensed electricians install the charger, circuit and CT sensor or energy meter.
5. We configure charging modes and show you how to switch between them in the app.

Warnings

The price shown is an indicative starting price for a standard installation; the final fixed price is confirmed in writing after a site check and quote.
Solar-matching charging requires an existing or new solar system at the property.
Charging from surplus solar depends on weather, season, household use and the vehicle being plugged in during daylight.
Long cable runs, trenching, pedestals or switchboard upgrades are quoted separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on your solar system size, household daytime use, the season and whether the car is at home during the day. Cars parked at home on weekdays can capture much more surplus than cars used for commuting. We look at your system's export history where it is available and give you a realistic view rather than a promise.

Weekend and holiday charging from solar still helps, and you can use scheduled charging at cheaper tariff times during the week. If you have a home battery, it can contribute too, although stored solar is often better value when used for evening household loads. We help you choose settings that suit your routine.

No. The charger follows your live solar export directly, so a battery is not required. If you already have one, you can usually set whether the battery or the car receives surplus solar first. A common setting prioritises the battery for evening household use, then sends the rest of the surplus to the car.

In most cases, yes, because a CT sensor or energy meter measures export at the switchboard regardless of which inverter you have. Some integrated chargers work with specific hybrid inverters and share their monitoring. We check your existing system and recommend the option that gives reliable solar-matching.
